April Fool’s in Avian Form

American Coots are just plain goofy. They swim and feed like ducks, and yet, they are a rail (that’s right I said it). Coots, actually, look a lot like a chicken,a frickin’ swimming chicken with a large white bill. They have lobate feet, which means that each toe has lobes of skin surrounding the digit, which function the same as the webbed feet of a duck.  Coots are lazy, or are they smart? Leucistic American Coot

At Polson Bay, a massive raft of American Coots were being harass by two Bald Eagles, when Terry found a surprise lurking in the sea of slate gray, a single leucistic American Coot was swimming. The bird was ~90% white with some dark speckling.

The great day and some big thoughts

This morning I went out for a little birding and photography, and I finally got some decent images of Red-necked Grebes at the Davis Lane Pond. Later on in the morning, I went to the Cherry River area and I encountered a group of ~20 young birders, or, at least, young adults being forced to bird…pretty cool. Now for the big thoughts…I just know that something big is going to happen. I don’t know what it is going to be, other than it will be incredible and special.
