The Time of the Gathering

As we enter into the season that has the most death and the emergence of life, a gathering takes place in the valleys of western Montana. Multitudes of Bald Eagles descend to watch over the birthing of calves, the last failings of winter, and the first ground squirrels as they race atop the snow. I see them perched on top of fence posts and utility poles as the cattle beneath are calving out. The eagles show incredible patience as they wait for the afterbirth or even the occasional stillborn. Time with an old friend

Finally, i got away from the business of everyday life and got a chance to going old with an old friend. That old friend is the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge near Stevensville, MT. It was incredible to be back at Lee Metcalf. John Parks led his annual Raptor-viewing trip to the Springhill area north of Bozeman for Sacajawea Audubon. We had ever increasing clouds throughout the day, and the birds didn’t seem to be all that active. As for raptors, we ended up with 27 Bald Eagles, 1 Golden Eagle, and handfuls of Rough-legged and Red-tailed Hawks. On Saturday, Sam Koenen and I decided to take a swing down to Ennis Lake and then up to Harrison Reservoir for the chance to see a Sabine’s Gull or a scoter or two.
